The Baurle family of Carlsbad was searching for information on athletic scholarships and found answers at the recent Fall College & University Scholarship Seminar held at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego. The free event was sponsored by Southern California Tennis Association. Mark Winters, who has extensive experience as a tennis journalist, teaching professional, college coach and national leader in the field because of his scholarship expertise, was responsible for the presentation. Over two-dozen attendees gained vast knowledge on the nuts and bolts of navigating the world of college scholarships.
“I loved the idea on how to market your child from a coaching perspective,” said Ruth Baurle. “I learned about the importance of including other information such as when your child plays multiple sports.”
Ethan Baurle, a freshman at La Costa Canyon High, is beginning his quest for a tennis scholarship and the family believes Winters’ information will put them on the right track. Other discussion points included tips on college visits, new NCAA rules, the use of social media and ways to utilize text messages in communicating with coaches.
Points touched on also included intangibles such as when to contact coaches, the types of responses to expect, and how best to utilize participation in college sponsored tennis camps and showcase events.
“I thought this workshop was very comprehensive,” said teaching professional Josh Jorgenson, Vice President of the USPTA North County San Diego Division. “I liked the advice on how to sell yourself to coaches as a doubles expert and the value of portraying yourself as a team player.”
The San Diego event was the first of five free Fall College & University Scholarship Seminars. Winters will be offering the same valuable information at the following locations throughout December.
