1. No CaptionJPGFrom the 6th until the 8th of February, the Indian Wells Tennis Garden hosted an International Tennis Federation Wheelchair Championships. It was a Level 3 event, at the storied location, which received the 2014 USTA Featured Facility Award.

D’Wayne Begay, the Southern California Tennis Service Representative whose area of focus is the Coachella Valley, said, “This was the fourth year of the tournament. Todd Hanover, who founded 2 Bounce Tennis, a charity organization that assists disabled individuals, was the Tournament Director.

“I’m certified as a wheelchair instructor and coach. I got involved working at Indian Wells Tennis Garden and coaching Todd. Before coming to the desert, I ran wheelchair tournaments at the country club, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where I worked.”

Tom Fey the boundlessly enthusiastic Director of Tennis at the facility and a member of the Southern California Tennis Association Board of Directors has made wheelchair tennis the focus at his state-of-the-art location. He selected Begay to run the weekly wheelchair clinic that takes place every Monday between the hours of 3:30 and 6:00 p.m. Wheelchair athletes, of all skill levels, participate in the free activity.

In summary, Begay said, “The tournament was a success and the players were very happy. Todd did a great job, putting everything together. The world-class players, who have never been here before, are really anxious to come back.”

He added, “There were a lot of comments about the wheelchair community tennis app. It is very similar to Facebook. Anyone can download it if they use a smart phone. All they need to do is type in – wheelchair tennis community.”
