Grossmont College Women’s Tennis Season Opener Gets Support From Alumni

Players past and present gathered for Grossmont College’s first women’s tennis match of the season against non-conference opponent Saddleback College with great expectations for a new year. It was heartwarming to see several past players cheering on the current crew.Alex Hughes and Oksanna WEst

Grossmont Head Coach Megan Haber enters this season after leading the Griffins to their previous 2014 and 2015 Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Championships. “We graduated most of our players and this year is a fresh team. Leading the Lady Griffins at No.1 doubles is freshmen Lynn San Ramon and Erica Corvera. Oksanna West and Alex Hughes played No. 2 doubles, and Karen Villa and Alexia Mercer were at No. 3. Hughes, a graduate of Cathedral Catholic High, arrived at Grossmont with extensive junior tennis experience at many levels. She partnered with West, who was a homeschooled athlete. “I’ve never played on a team before so this is all new to me. I’m looking forward to improving and really enjoying this experience,” West said.

While Grossmont fought a tough battle, the Lady Griffins fell, 4-5, to Saddleback. Offering support, however, was Grossmont Assistant Coach Renee Malcuit, also a 2006 graduate, and Grossmont’s 2012 Grossmont College Asst coach ReneeAll-Conference Doubles standout Alexis Ronney. Other graduates at the match were former Griffins Juan Reyes and Eddy Corvera Jr from the 2012 season.

“It’s strange to be back and watching from the sidelines,” said Ronney, who was also a scholarship athlete for Minnesota State University Mankato. “It doesn’t feel like it was that long ago but it has been five years.”

ReyeAlexis juan and eddys and Corvera now attend San Diego State University and participate in the school’s Tennis on Campus program, which is sponsored by the USTA. “We get to play tennis for our school but it’s a club sport,” said Reyes. “It is a blast and we really enjoy it.”
