20th Annual Claremont Club Pro Classic Is Underway

USTAFYIG_SoCalCLAREMONT, Calif., (Sept. 15, 2015) – All eight first-round doubles were completed on Tuesday on the first day of main-draw action at the Claremont Club Pro Classic, USTA Pro Circuit $10,000 Futures tournament taking place at the Claremont Club.

Eight scheduled first-round singles matches were not played, however, because rain fell into the afternoon. All 16 first-round singles matches are on the schedule for Wednesday starting at 9 a.m.

Four of the eight doubles matches were close on Tuesday and split sets, forcing a first-to-10 point super tiebreaker. Among the winners were the top-seeded team American team of Junior Ore and Hunter Nicholas, who won in straight sets.

Both the singles finalists in last weekend U.S. Open American Collegiate Invitational were in action as part of the No. 2 and 4-seeded doubles teams, respectively. And both needed super tiebreakers to advance. UCLA junior Mackenzie McDonald beat Gonzales Austin in the final in the showcased college event in Flushing, N.Y. on Saturday.

After a long travel day for both on Sunday, McDonald was in Claremont with UCLA teammate Martin Redlicki as the No. 4 seeded team took out Pac-12 rivals and wild-card team Tom Fawcett and David Wilczynski of Stanford, 2-6, 7-5, 10-6.

Vanderbilt’s Austin, who fell to McDonald in straight sets at the U.S. Open in singles, teamed with Jean-Yves Aubone to form the No. 2-seeded team and the pair got past Americans Farzin Amiri and John Lamble, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 10-6.

Aubone has won 13 USTA Pro Circuit doubles titles over the last three years, including two USTA Pro Circuit doubles titles in 2014. Also this year, Aubone represented the U.S. in the Pan American Games in Toronto.

A couple of USTA wild-card teams and twins took each other on in the first round as Southern Californians Andy Chang and Alan Chang beat the 17-year-old Vance brothers, Jake and Jamie, 7-6 (3), 6-4.
