US Open National Playoffs – Chance To Play A Major

For many players, the opportunity to play one of the four majors – Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon or US Open – is a career goal. Now, thanks to the US Open National Playoffs, which is in its sixth year of providing the winners with wild cards into the main draw of the last of the year’s Grand Slam tournaments, Southern Californians have a chance to showcase their talent at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center beginning August 31st.

This year’s Southern California National Playoffs, featuring a men, women’s and mixed doubles as in the past, but expanded to also include both men and women’s doubles, will take place June 8-12 at The Claremont Club. Entries close on May 29th. Registration for the 2015 sectional qualifying tournament opens Sunday, March 15th, at www.USOpen.org/NationalPlayoffs

In 2014, at The Claremont Club where the section event was held, Daniel McCall of San Francisco, a Duke junior, won the Men’s Singles. Kelly Chen, a local standout junior, was the Women’s Singles champion. West Nott and Kaitlyn Christian, a USC Associate Women’s Head Coach, and a recent graduate combination, claimed the Mixed Doubles honors. In Northern California’s National Open Playoffs, which were staged at the Chamisal Tennis & Fitness Club in Salinas, Shuhei Shibahara, a junior at UCI, and Ena Shibahara, another junior section talent, were the Mixed Doubles champions and became the only brother and sister team to advance to the National Open Playoff final.
