The Bakersfield Racquet Club will host a USTA Futures tournament (the Bakersfield Tennis Open) beginning March 16th. A week later on March 23rd, the Calabasas Tennis & Swim Club will be the site of another USTA Futures event, the Pro Tennis Championships of Calabasas. Both offer $15, 000 in prize money, but the real reward for the Southern California tennis community is having an opportunity to watch a quality group of players who are “on the way up”, perform at two captivatingly comfortable “like your own club” venues.

Last year, Daniel Kosakowski, a former UCLA star, won the Bakersfield championships (the first played in Kern County since 1995), while Sekou Bangoura and Evan King, who had distinguished careers, playing at the University of Florida and University of Michigan respectively, claimed the doubles title. At the fourteenth Calabasas gathering, Marcos Giron, another UCLA standout, in what was a preview to the 2014 NCAA singles championship where he was the winner, garnered the title. Bangoura and King, again, were successful in the doubles final.

The first Bakersfield pro tournament took place in 1993. It was held again the following year, and in an interesting aside, Paul Annacone and Justin Gimelstob, before becoming a coaching impresario and a tennis entrepreneur in their next tennis lives, were the doubles champions. The event went on a hiatus after 1995 until it returned last year. Calabasas’ tournament history is “recognize that name” impressive with Michael Chang, Ivo Karlovic, Mark Philippoussis and Donald Young, who are but a few of the past singles winners.
