Impressive field lined up for Wheelchair Doubles Masters in Mission Viejo

This year’s field at the prestigious UNIQLO Wheelchair Doubles Masters is expected to be the strongest yet. The City of Mission Viejo will host the exciting event November 3-7 at the Marguerite Tennis Pavilion.

The UNIQLO Wheelchair Doubles Masters is the International Tennis Federation’s flagship wheelchair tennis doubles event. First staged in 2000, the season-ending event features the world’s top eight men’s pairs, top six women’s pairs and top four quad pairs. Mission Viejo is the first U.S. city to ever host the event, which will take place in this South County community for the third straight year.

“This will be an exhilarating year as we expect most of the top players and teams from the last two years to return to Mission Viejo,” said Jason Harnett, Mission Viejo’s head tennis professional and co-tournament director.  “That includes the top singles players: world #1 Shingo Kunieda of Japan in the men’s division; world #1 Jiske Griffioen of the Netherlands in the women’s division; and world #2 David Wagner of the USA in the quad division.”

The competition will also feature Dutch duo Jiske Griffioen and Aniek Van Koot, this year’s U.S. Open champions at Flushing Meadows that defeated last year’s UNIQLO Doubles Masters and Calendar Grand Slam champs Great Britain’s Jordanne Whiley and Yui Kamiji of Japan.  Returning for a third Mission Viejo appearance is 2012 Doubles gold medalist Marjolein Buis of the Netherlands.

In the quad division are David Wagner and Nick Taylor – possibly the most prolific doubles teams in the history of tennis. The pair returns to Mission Viejo with three Paralympic gold medals.
